Interference from Floor Cleaners

Discussions about GC-MS, LC-MS, LC-FTIR, and other "coupled" analytical techniques.

Have had a problem with janitorial staff utilizing floor cleaners that make their way into our GCMS analysis. Mostly shows as limonene. Anyone run into this problem and are aware of a floor cleaner that provides proper cleaning for a tile floor but is neutral in odor? Maybe even one that is designed to clean sensitive analytical labs and their adjacent bathrooms.

Thanks
Limonene can be used as a scent or as the main cleaning solvent. If used as the scent, ask them to use the unscented version of the current cleaning product and you should be fine. If it is the main cleaning solvent, they will need to switch to another cleaning product entirely.

If in doubt, plain water (perhaps mildly dosed with a cleaning product) will generally be undetectable.
Limonene and 2-Butoxyethanol are the worst offenders from cleaners. If you are dealing with only organic analysis then maybe an ammonia based product would work, but if you are analyzing for ammonia or TKN in another part of the lab then that would cause problems there.

Difficult to find an all around cleaner to use in a laboratory doing trace analysis of varying types.
The past is there to guide us into the future, not to dwell in.
