Make up gas for NPD (FTD) detector

Hi all,

As I've known, NPD detector can operate with nitrogen as make up gas. But I just learn that the Shimadzu 2010 GC NPD (FTD) uses only Helium as make up gas. I am puzzled why's that.
Can I use nitrogen instead ?
Thanks

Hi,
You can use nitrogen as make up but helium is preferred. You must bear in mind that the amount of hydrogen relative to the other gases will affect
nitrogen-to-carbon selectivity of the detector so helium is usually the gas mainly used.
