Been trying to bring an HP 6890 online, and am just getting nowhere.

This appears to be a 6890A (s/n 6573) that had been used with a mass spec as gauged by the hole in the side. I installed a new detector, which the instrument seems to recognize. There was a network card installed (G1369-66500), which I set to all configuration switches down (off) IIRC.

Not having a crossover cable, I made my own by switching the two wires and crimping a new RJ45 plug on it.

No joy with plugging it in and pinging 192.168.0.12, so I messed around with as many settings as I could. No joy.

Using BootP and following the instructions here:

I use the MAC address I read off the card, the hostname I assigned is Agilent6890, and I've used several IP addresses; if I want to use 192.168.0.12, do I use that here?

Subnet mask I assign as 255.255.255.0 and gateway is 192.168.0.1. Restart Agilent BootP Services. Power on the GC, and ensure network settings are correct:

Pinging 192.168.0.12 yields "Destination host unreachable," as does 192.168.0.1, and 192.168.254.11.

The log file on BootP says this:

Error: IP address not found: 192.168.1.3
Status: BOOTP Request finished processing at outer most layer

Tftpd64 says 192.168.1.3 is the Wireless-N 1000 interface (I think).

I am not using Chemstation so I cannot change the network settings there.

Agilent GC Firmware Update gives me "Unable to connect to instrument" using IP addresses 192.168.0.12, 192.168.1.3, 192.168.254.11, 192.168.0.1, and 192.168.0.10.

What am I doing wrong? Anything else to try?

Make sure you also done:
1. Change computer network IP to static IP: 192.168.254.10 or something like that.
2. Check Config PIN on G1369 Lan card as Agilent config guide below
3. Check connection LAN cable, make sure that is right PIN config cable to use for Agilent LAN card.

If you used G1369, and switch config PIN to default you will got default IP: 192.168.254.11

and follow GC config method as below guide

For window 7 with G1369 LAN card, do not need to use IO lib, also do not need to install BootP at first. Chemstation version more than B04.xx will automatic install and recognized network information.


For window XP:
For Bootp just need to use in case your LAN card is "Jet direct" version
Notes: Use "Bootp server" alternative will automatic recognize the GC IP,
If you used "Bootp service" version, maybe you will get trouble IP recognized.

When you connect GC and PC do LED lights on both network adapters light up? Be careful if you use latest G1369C card you have 2 inputs CAN and LAN, if you plug cable to CAN and your computer LAN the later will brake (CAN use higher voltage than LAN). Your network car is almost sure post y. 1998 so you can freely use straight cable, if crossover is not available as during the handshake card will automatically switch to correct settings. I would avoid using BotP, best to uninstall it and delete table.

I would firstly set up IP to default by putting switches 5 and 6 up and the rest down. This should give your GC IP 192.168.254.11 . Next change your computer to IP: 192.168.254.10 , SM: 255.255.255.0 , GW: empty (it has to be network card witch is connected to GC). Now try and ping 192.168.254.11 if you don't get ping replay try to ping yourself and localhost.
If ping is returned go with telnet (in W7 you have to activate telnet https://www.wikihow.com/Activate-Telnet-in-Windows-7 ). telnet 192.168.254.11
in telnet us command " ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx " where x's are IP address you want to assign. use / command to check if stored IP is correct (there will still be active IP as current until restart but will also list stored one). now still with telnet type "quit" it should save current settings and close connection. now turn GC off take card out and set switch 6 down (only 5 up rest down) and reinsert card. set your PC IP to the same subnet (pref xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx-1), turn GC on and try to ping newly assigned IP,
All right, thank you both for the replies.

I was able to get in and change the address using Telnet to 192.168.254.12. The changes were not reflected immediately; even when refreshed, the original IP address (10.1.1.101) remained. I had to q out of Telnet and back in to see the changes had been made, and confirmed it was 192.168.254.12. I then switched #5 down so that #6 was the only one up.

At that point, I got good ping to 192.168.254.12, but only when the IP Address and Subnet mask were set to 192.168.254.12 and 255.255.255.0 respectively in TCP/IPv4 settings, and if I unplug the LAN cord I still get ping, so I suspect that means I just set it to ping its own address.

What settings should I use for TCP/IPv4? Right now, they are:

IP Address: 192.168.254.12
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.12

And alternate DNS server is left empty.

I get good ping using that whether the GC is connected or not. I have tried many permutations on TCP/IPv4 settings, BootP settings, ping tests, etc. and am just confusing myself.
1. find out what.s the IP adress of your PC.
-> in Windows cmd shell type ipconfig (with or w/o the parameter /all)

2. set the IP.adress of the Agilent module to something different but keeping every part with 255 in the subnet mask the same

eg. PC's IP 192.168.254.12 ; 255.255.255.0
then set GC to something like 192.168.254.13 / 255.255.255.0
Do not use same IP for GC and PC (tcp/ip4) if I read you correctly you have both set on 192.168.254.12? change PC IP (tcp/ip4) to 192.168.254.x where x is not 12 (I normally use for PC 10 20 30... for GC 11 21 31... for other detectors eg. MS 12 22 32...) and then try to ping GC (in your case 192.168.254.12).
On switch configuration there should be only 5 on (not 6). If you use only 6 up it will search DHCP server to assign IP address
Thank you both for the replies; it was as simple as the switch. I set the wrong one down. After fixing that, I now have communication with the GC. Thanks so much ATAIR in particular.
