I am using a 100 metre Petrocol column which is unable to separate 2,3 Dimethylbutane and MTBE in Naptha. The temperature for GC oven starts from 30 deg.c.& the carrier is Helium. I would like to know whether 150 metre DH Petrocol Column separate MTBE from 2,3 dimethylbutane without using cryogenics?

Sunil,

I do not know if the 150 meter column will do the job. However, you should look into the literature, the best method is to inject the napha into a DB-1 type column and then go into the 10 meter Lowox column from Varian (I am not from Varian). The two columns should go either into a valve or a Deans switch system to allow you to backflush any heavies. We have customers who can see 1ppm of MTBE easily in their naptha using this approach.
