Hi,

I'm searching for a good book on infrared spectroscopy with a focus on interpretation of spectra in the mid-ir region. I did a google search, but I didn't find the reviews on there very helpful.

Any suggestions would help.

thanks,

Hi MestizoJoe,

Please feel free to consider those texts written by Brian C. Smith of Spectros Associates; you can review portions of the text on Google Books.

Infrared Spectral Interpretation: A Systematic Approach

A 265-page hardcover volume covering many aspects of how to use IR spectra to perform identities and identify unknowns. The book begins with what determines the peak positions, heights and widths in a spectrum. Then, a systematic, 10-step method for properly interpreting spectra is presented. The spectra of economically important molecules including hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, carbonyl groups, amides, amines, polymers, and inorganics are analyzed using this 10-step method. Each chapter includes an introduction to the structures and nomenclature for the molecules covered many example spectra, and unknown spectra that can be interpreted for practice. This book is published by CRC Press (ISBN 0-8493-2463-7).

Brian Smith once taught FT-IR and IR Interpretation for the ACS, don't know if he still does, off-hand. I've found all of his books quite useful, the information within remains unchanged with time, much like other texts I've read over the years.

Best Wishes!

Hey!

I just bumped into your topic and this is the same issue I'm dealing right now. I searched all available resources and couldn't find anything useful. I've got only one link to service that had the most useful book. Ofcourse this is not the best book, but better than nothing.
Hi, what book are you talking about?

Hi,
Spectroscopy magazine has been running articles every month for many months on IR interpretation. The articles are very detailed and if I remember correctly written by Brian Smith.
You should be able to get access to the magazine without cost
Kevin
you can go through Infrared Spectroscopy 1st Edition by James M. Thompson. Very nice book, clear explanation and easy understanding. You will easily get it on Amazon.
