detection of active ions from solution

I wonder if there is any way to detect only active ions in solution and number of them. I mean the ions which aren't linked to another one.
Is there any machine that will anable me to conduct such testing.

I believe you need to do some homework to learn about how salts dissolve.

Perhaps an ion chromatograph? Please, what is the nature of the mixture and the components within the mixture that you are trying to separate...or to write about?
