This morning I came in and an analyst was getting an 'RFPA is not adjusted correctly' error with her 5977 after cleaning the source and pumping it down. I went to adjust the RF coils and the m/z I was getting at 100amu went 5... 5... 4... 1400... 4... 5... 4... 1400... so it looked like a sporadic short of some sort. I assumed initially that we got a bad top-board on an instrument that went out of warranty in March (argh). After venting and pulling apart the source I noticed that the brown wire that went to the extractor lens was damaged because the analyst had not rotated the extractor lens to the correct position which caused the wire to get pinched and short to the transfer line. Re-adjusting the wire fixed the issue and we're ordering a replacement wire.
